Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to visit. The Anchorage is a year-round camp and conference center existing for the purpose of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, developing strong Christian character, challenging individuals to Christian service, and promoting Christian fellowship and culture through Bible study, recreation, and camp living.
an-chor-age (an’ker ij) n.
1. a place where vessels are anchored.
2. something that can be firmly held on to or relied on.
3. a unique Christian camp situated on Lake Waccamaw in southeastern North Carolina.
The Anchorage claims for itself to offer Unique Christian Camping . You may wonder why we would dare make such a claim—there are many camps of all sorts all over America? “Why does The Anchorage call itself unique?”
For many, the word “camp” conjures up pictures of winding roads leading to cabins nestled among rolling hills with ball fields tucked between the shower rooms and the mess hall, a canoe suspended on a glassy pond and all miles away from civilization.
This is not the picture The Anchorage portrays. Situated on the north shore of 9000 acre Lake Waccamaw, in the middle of town, The Anchorage is housed under one roof —there is not a rolling hill for miles and all our boats have mega-horsepower motors attached. The lake, the athletic field behind, and the main lodge in the middle make up the majority of the camp facility. And what a tremendous tool this facility has been!!
But more than its facility a camp is defined by activities, program, atmosphere, and relationships. It is in these areas that the uniqueness of The Anchorage truly shines.
Individuals have different needs, as unique to each one as a fingerprint. All that the Lord has provided here caters to meeting people on a personal level and addressing those unique needs. There are very few camps that are equal for building relationships between young people and their counselors, youth sponsors, or pastors. The core activities promote participation and challenge at the individual level while providing the foundation for a lifetime of continuing growth. The family atmosphere accompanied by the family-style meals makes it difficult for even the most introverted to “get lost in the crowd.” The size allows each speaker and each counselor to know each camper personally, which makes for a very practical, personal application of God’s Word.
Combine these qualities with what you’ve come to expect from all summer camps—fun, fellowship, and freedom from the distractions of everyday life—and you have not only the formula for very effective ministry but a very unique camp indeed.
God has been very gracious to us and has blessed this ministry now for over 30 years. If you or someone you know could benefit from a unique camping experience, please contact us—we’d love to be of service.
